Fuel cost ups shipping bill (U.S.)

Carriers once again are responding to higher oil and gasoline prices by passing along the costs. Rather than raise base rates, they impose fuel surcharges.

– DHL raises the Air Express and International surcharge from 18.5 percent of the total shipping bill, to 19.5 percent. The surcharge for Ground Delivery service rises from 5 percent to 5.3 percent.

-UPS raises the Ground Delivery fuel surcharge from 5 percent to 5.25 percent. The surcharge for air and international deliveries goes from 16.50 percent to 17.50 percent.

FedEx fuel surcharges go up the same as UPS, for the same categories.

In catalogs and on Web sites, most of the tables on shipping costs don’t include a fuel surcharge.

The U.S. Postal Service, whose rates are governed by a federal commission, can’t impose fuel surcharges.

That doesn’t stop the postal service from taking other steps to realign pricing with the actual costs of processing the mail. First class stamp rates rose from 39 to 41 cents in May, Since then, the postal service also takes more consideration of the size and shape of a piece of mail, when calculating prices.

ABX Air & DHL agree to arbitration

ABX Air, Inc said that it and DHL have agreed to arbitrate a dispute concerning allocation of certain overhead expenses, and that DHL has paid ABX Air USD 8.8 million in budgeted expense reimbursements previously withheld.

Since the USD 8.8 million payments were withheld on November 5, 2007, ABX Air said that DHL has continued to reimburse it in full for budgeted expenses.

As further described in ABX Air’s Form 8-K filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission on November 9, 2007, DHL is in default under terms of the ACMI and Hub Services agreements. The default resulted from an USD 8.8 million reduction in DHL’s weekly pre-funding payment to ABX Air on November 5, 2007, for ABX Air’s expenses related to the ACMI and Hub Services agreements. DHL cited as the reason for the reduction its contention that it was no longer responsible to reimburse ABX Air for certain overhead expenses. ABX Air notified DHL that it was in default under the commercial agreements because the agreements do not permit the withholding of amounts in dispute. ABX Air said that DHL remains in default under the ACMI and Hub Services agreements. DHL maintains that it has not defaulted and that its actions were proper.

TNT in talks with Airbus about launch of new-build A320 family freighter programme

Airbus is talks with TNT Airways about the launch of a new-build A320 family freighter programme, but the ongoing sales surge for the passenger version could threaten the project.

The Liege, Belgium-based express package carrier is planning a “massive purchase” of narrowbody freighters to replace its Boeing 737-300F fleet and support its growth plans, says the airline’s managing director Niky Terzakis.

The creation of a new-build single-aisle cargo aircraft would be a first for Airbus, which has so far only offered the A300-600F and A330-200F as factory-new freighters.

Terzakis says the discussions, which also involve leasing companies, envisage the production of standard passenger A320/A321s that would be ferried “green” to the EADS EFW plant in Dresden for the installation of the passenger to freighter (P2F) conversion kit that is being developed by the Airbus Freighter Conversion (AFC) joint venture with Russia.

The proposed TNT programme, dubbed G2F for “green to freighter”, is mainly focused on the A321 airframe due to its larger payload and volume, says Terzakis.

Sources say that some 2012 production slots had been earmarked for the first G2F airframes, but these are believed to have since been allocated to customers for the passenger aircraft.
