The new bank in the Austrian post office: P.S.K. turns into PSK BANK

P.S.K. has now assumed a new role as a separate brand within the context of the new positioning of BAWAG P.S.K. The new addition to the company name, using the word “Bank”, underlines the core competence of PSK Bank in the banking business. As a result, PSK Bank has become “the bank in the post office“, offering a maximum level of comfort and ease of use to private customers.

In order to more effectively fulfill customer demands, the PSK BANK has set new priorities for its future operations, which will be supported by its business strategy, a new logo, newly designed branch offices and innovative products. The clear-cut strategic goal of the new BAWAG PSK in Austria is to concentrate on business with private customers.

PSK BANK stands for trust, integrity and reliability, providing active customer service and support. The convenient, nationwide network of post offices provides intelligent products and services as the response to growing customer demands.

Due to its extensive network of branch offices, Austrian Post represents one of the most important distribution channels for the banking products provided by BAWAG PSK. As a result of the new positioning of PSK BANK, the sale of banking products is being expanded to become a core competency of the post offices. “The distribution of financial products and services comprises 25 pct of total revenues achieved in our branches, thus contributing to the successful business development of our branch network. In the upcoming years, we are striving for a solid growth path of 7 pct – 7.5 pct”, says Herbert Götz, Member of the Management Board of Austrian Post with responsibility for its Branch Network Division.

Pitney Bowes Inventor Breaks 100th U.S. Patent Milestone

Pitney Bowes announced that inventor Robert Cordery was recently granted his 100th and 101st U.S. patents in September. Cordery becomes only the second technologist in Pitney Bowes history to reach this prolific level. The milestone hundredth patent is a mail processing system that encodes mailpieces with unique barcoding to verify the processing of each mailpiece by a carrier or third party.

Cordery has worked for Pitney Bowes in research and development since 1984. In 1989 he joined the Technical Ladder, a career path parallel to management, where he is a Principal Fellow at Pitney Bowes. He holds patents in mailstream communications, value added services, mail rating, postage payment, metering, meter infrastructure, barcode reading, printing, key management, electronic commerce, electronic article surveillance, safe mail, and voting.

Ronald Sansone is the most prolific inventor in Pitney Bowes history with 121 U.S. patents. A former Pitney Bowes fellow and vice president of Strategic Innovation, his innovative focus was on enhancing Pitney Bowes’s core business by developing and integrating new technologies.

Pitney Bowes intellectual property portfolio includes more than 3,500 patents worldwide in areas such as shipping, laser printing, encryption and mailing.

Schenker – First test phase between Hamburg and Hong Kong successfully concluded. Now also fitted with GPS sensors

Schenker’s oceanfreight containers that are used all over the world can now for the first time be continuously monitored, thanks to a special new security technique. For test purposes the company has fitted out ten of its containers, also known as SCHENKERsmartbox, with special sensors in addition to RFID technology. These ‘GPS Security Devices’ communicate the current GPS coordinates, temperature levels and security parameters (like door activities). The transport units are in regular use between Hamburg and Hong Kong.

The first test phase for the RFID technology has been successfully completed. RFID status notifications communicate the most important points where liability changes hands, when the containers are loaded and unloaded at the packing stations in Hamburg and Hong Kong, as well as the time of arrival at the terminal. This gives a clear view of when and where the load is being transshipped.

“It is becoming clear that this technology will be ripe for serial production in the near future. At least the RFID technology promises to be suitable for use on a wide scale, from the economic point of view as well,” comments Dr. Wolfgang Dräger, Senior Vice President, PM Ocean Freight, Schenker AG.

The new GPS sensors give information at regular intervals about conditions in the container: is it cold or hot, are there any sudden temperature changes? Does the container get shaken up in the course of the journey? Does it deviate from the planned route? These and other data are compiled in a report, which Schenker can then consult. “As soon as this technology is ready for serial production, it will open up new possibilities of service to our particularly demanding industrial customers,” explains Dr. Wolfgang Dräger. For example, the temperature of pharmaceutical products and other sensitive goods can be continuously monitored, which could come out cheaper in the long term than transporting them in refrigerated containers, provided that the appropriate temperature tolerances can be guaranteed.

It is a similar situation with goods that are vulnerable to shock, like laptops and other valuable articles. Even if it is not possible to prevent the goods from being shaken about at all, at least you can determine in retrospect when and where they have been exposed to shock and what has occurred. Finally it is possible to determine when and where the door of the container has been opened. If this happens unexpectedly or the door is forced, an alarm is triggered and at the same time appropriate security measures will be initiated.

Air France Cargo Network Now Live on Unisys-Operated Cargo Portal Services

Unisys announces that the Air France cargo network is now available through Unisys-operated Cargo Portal Services (CPS)*, a leading electronic booking and shipment management service for the air cargo industry. “This development builds on KLM Cargo’s success with CPS over the last four years. As a merged company, we are committed to offering clients the most suitable electronic tools to do business with us, so it was natural to extend CPS coverage for all clients through our combined network,” said Michael Wisbrun, president, Air France Cargo – KLM Cargo.

“Unisys and the CPS community welcome the Air France Cargo network,” said Christopher Shawdon, vice president and partner, Logistics Solutions for Unisys. “KLM is already a big part of CPS and it will be a natural step for users to book on the combined AF-KL Cargo network.”
