Microsoft Technology Innovation Helps Bring Postal Industry Into the Electronic Age

How do you send physical mail to a business person whose most frequent address is at 37,000 feet? That may sound like a riddle, but to Earth Class Mail Corp., it’s a serious question.

This week at POST-EXPO 2007 — an international postal technology conference held in Barcelona, Spain — new and innovative offerings are being showcased that address this question. Earth Class Mail’s solution is a Web-based software system, developed on Microsoft .NET, that seeks to do for postal mail what cellular technology did for telephone calls: make it mobile by making it digital.

Earth Class Mail’s software is a compelling example of the kind of innovation Microsoft champions through a postal vertical industry team within its public-sector organization. Focused on meeting the needs of the worldwide postal industry, this team aims to apply Microsoft’s solutions, technologies and global partner network to help postal service providers and organizations gain new efficiencies and business opportunities in the Internet era.

To learn more, PressPass spoke with Maxim Lesur, Worldwide Postal Industry managing director at Microsoft. Ron Wiener, CEO of Seattle-based Earth Class Mail, joined in the discussion.

Datascanning takes over Vester Kopi's scanning contracts

With effect from 1 October 2007, Vester Kopi a/s has sold its scanning contracts to Data Scanning A/S, which is a fully-owned subsidiary of Post Danmark. As at the same date, Data Scanning takes over all relevant personnel and equipment.

The agreement means that, in future, all Vester Kopi’s scanning jobs will be performed by Data Scanning.

CEO William Schulin-Zeuthen, Vester Kopi: “In Vester Kopi we have made the strategic decision to concentrate on the original basis of our business, which is all types of graphical production and digital document handling – the areas in which we have our core competencies. We have chosen Data Scanning as our strategic partner because they have expertise that supplements our business excellently.”

The agreement gives Vester Kopi’s customers access to central scanning with capture of data of their own choice. This is possible because of flexible services aimed at both small and large enterprises.

CEO Niels Frost Larsen, Data Scanning: “The combination of the two companies’ competencies enables us to provide a broader range of products while at the same time strengthening the quality and security of our services. We can offer tailored solutions to Vester Kopi’s customers, which mean that they do not have to buy scanning equipment and software or to build up their own competence in this area.

Future scanning jobs will be performed at Data Scanning’s three large scanning centers in Copenhagen, Fredericia and Aarhus. Data Scanning has 140 employees, all of whom work exclusively with data capture and the digitalization of documents.
