TNT projects fast growth in Brazil

After the acquisition of Brazilian express company Mercúrio in January 2007, TNT wants to accelerate its growth in Brazil. With 100 depots and around 6,000 employees, Mercúrio offers TNT a pole position for its South American growth strategy.

“TNT is aiming for double digit growth in Brazil as the domestic express market booms. TNT becomes the first express services company in this country to offer both domestic and international deliveries,” said TNT’s chief executive officer Peter Bakker in São Paulo.

TNT’s group managing director express, Marie Christine Lombard, added: “Orders from TNT’s global customers will boost Mercúrio’s activities in Brazil. Conversely, Mercúrio opens us the doors of another dynamic economy. The acquisition of Mercúrio fits into TNT’s strategy of becoming number one in emerging markets.”

Royal Mails Postal union demands 27% pay rise

Royal Mail is facing union demands for a 27 per cent pay rise that the post group claims will cost an extra GBP 1 billion a year, The Times has learnt.

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) has asked for the minimum payment of its members to be brought into line with average basic pay in the UK. The main postal union is also demanding that its members work a 35-hour week, rather than the existing 40 hours.

The CWU says that postal workers, who earn a minimum of GBP 311 per week, should be able to benefit from investment and improvements expected in the business over the next few years.

In a letter to Royal Mail, Dave Ward, the CWU deputy general secretary, said: “Given the proposed scale of change within the company, we require a pay settlement that achieves UK average basic pay for OPGs [outdoor postal grades]. This was set at GBP 395 per week in 2006 and we are undertaking research to establish whether the figure has subsequently increased.”

The CWU says that the rise could be phased in, although Royal Mail said that the union had called for the increase to be immediate.

The postal organisation, which has a pension deficit of GBP 6.6 billion and recently reported a plunge in its profits, says that it cannot afford such a rise. A spokesman said: “This pay claim will cost us GBP 1 billion at a time when we are facing full competition and the cost of servicing our pension deficit is pushing our profits down 86 per cent.” The group maintains that it already pays better rates than its competitors.

UPS technology enhancements make global commerce easier

UPS announced it is making it easier for customers to conduct business around the world through enhancements to its WorldShip®, Quantum Viewsm and Billing Solutions technology offerings.

The enhancements will save customers time and money by streamlining the preparation, management and tracking of multiple types of shipments – whether domestic or international, small package or heavy freight.

More than 550,000 customers worldwide have installed WorldShip, making it one of the most widely deployed transportation software applications in the world. The latest version now being rolled out – WorldShip 9.0 – is available in 14 languages and enables customers to take advantage of three time-of-day delivery options now being offered in most major global commercial centers.

UPS’s popular Quantum View applications, when used with WorldShip, open even more doors to managing global trade. Shippers can keep their customers notified of shipment status with Quantum View Notifysm and once shipments are en route, Quantum View Manage provides visibility into where the shipment is in the supply chain.

These enhancements reflect the integration of UPS Freightsm, the former Overnite Corp. UPS’s acquisition of Overnite positioned it as a top motor freight carrier in the U.S. and expanded UPS’s transportation solutions to include a full suite of freight services.

The third broad enhancement unveiled involves an expansion of the UPS Billing Solutions portfolio to include an electronic freight invoice. The portfolio provides customers with detailed financial information about their small package and UPS Freight shipments to enable customers to better manage their transportation costs.
