Deutsche Post is eyeing a move into the Chinese letter delivery market, board member Klaus Knappik said in a newspaper interview published Monday. “We could imagine teaming up with the Chinese post office to offer certain value-added letter delivery services. I can’t say any more than that at the current juncture,” Knappik told the daily Die Welt. European courier urged to put up hub in Subic

The Philippine Government is wooing a European courier service firm to put up shop in Subic as the scheduled transfer of Federal Express’ Asian hub from the freeport to China nears. An official privy to the matter said authorities had invited the company to visit possible sites in Subic and assess opportunities for a hub of operations here through their respective distribution network. The official declined to name the firm, saying it might get turned off with the premature publicity. With American firms Fedex operating a hub in Subic and UPS in Clark special economic zone, the country is hosting half of the four biggest package delivery and supply chain service providers in the world. The remaining two are Netherlands-headquartered TNT NV and Germany’s DHL International, both of which already have presence here.

TNT Express celebrates 60 years of successful delivery 1946 – 2006

TNT Express today announced the 60th anniversary of the company’s first operations, which began in Australia in 1946. Delivering 3.5 million parcels, documents and pieces of freight every week to over 200 countries across the world, TNT Express reported profits of 474 million euros in 2005. When the company was first established with a single truck in Australia at the end of the Second World War, TNT Express made a profit of eight dollars per week during the first few months of trading, hauling timber, glass bottles, cement and soil. “Evolving from a small Australian enterprise into a globally recognised brand which employs 48,000 people across the world is a great achievement. With the on-going development of new customer-focused services and additional air and road routes that offer unlimited capacity, we are confident that TNT Express will maintain its success over the next 60 years,” said Marie-Christine Lombard, Group Managing Director, TNT Express.

UPS in position to buy

UPS is in a position to make an “extremely large” acquisition if it finds a deal that makes strategic sense, said Scott Davis, chief financial officer.
The comments revived long-standing speculation that UPS could bid for TNT, the Dutch post group, which has large package delivery operations in Europe and Asia. UPS is considered a potential buyer of TNT’s logistics division, which the group plans to auction this year, but some analysts believe the parcel business could also be sold. Mr Davis gave no clues about possible targets but cited the company’s Dollars 1.9bn of free cash flow in the first quarter as evidence that UPS had the financial strength to make a big deal. The comments came as UPS announced a 10.5 per cent increase in first-quarter net profits to Dollars 975m, driven by surging international shipments.
