TNT announces Q3 2005 results

TNT reports revenues increase of 9%, operating income up 37% in Express and earnings per share 5% higher. CEO Peter Bakker commented “I continue to be pleased with the good progress of Express, which hit another record third quarter margin. Mail delivered as expected with solid execution of the masterplans, which have now brought us almost EUR200 million of cumulative savings, and European Mail Networks achieved a revenue growth of 34% this quarter. In Logistics, we moved ahead with the refocusing of our French operations, and have received offers for large parts of this business. In the rest of Logistics, partly resulting from an unexpected law change in Italy, margin pressure remained, although we did see some positive signs in business development.”

Royal Mail row brews – No taxpayer bail-out without full privatisation

Royal Mail is entering a crucial phase in its 345-year history. The next few months will see its regulator decide how much it will be able to charge for stamps until 2010, the publication of the Bain report into its future and the advent of full competition for postal services in January 2006.

Small wonder, then, that there is a sudden clamour about the company’s Pounds 4.5bn pension fund deficit. Royal Mail knows this is one of its strongest cards in arguing for lighter price controls. Allan Leighton, its chairman, also knows that the deficit could scupper his plan to make Royal Mail a partly employee-owned business.

Ministers meanwhile appear split between those who believe that there may be a case for a taxpayer bail out and those who want to resist such a bail out at all costs. The regulator should treat all this jostling for position with a heavy dose of salt.

The prize for best sub Post Office went to West Monkseaton branch near Whitley Bay. Minister warns An Post could be ‘extinct’ in 4 years

An Post will be “extinct” in little more than four years unless postal workers accept major work changes, the Government has warned.

From January, private companies will be able to carry letters weighing more than 50g, and ordinary letter post will be opened up by 2009.

“We have liberalisation coming. It is inevitable in 2009. It is already there in a number of areas. If An Post isn’t strong enough to withstand competition it is going to be extinct very, very quickly after 2009, if not before that,” said Minister for Communications Noel Dempsey.

Speaking in Killarney, Co Kerry, on Saturday, the Minister was critical of existing work practices in the semi-State company.

Describing them as “archaic”, he said postmen’s basic pay had been increased over the years through the common availability of overtime. “You have a situation whereby people get paid overtime on their holidays. You have a situation where people can bank their overtime at one stage and use it at another time.”
