Outdated logistics threaten China's economic growth

China needs to bring its logistics infrastructure and supply chain management capabilities into the 21st century if it is to maintain its competitiveness in the global marketplace.

Studies show that logistics expenses in China are higher than in countries with mature logistics infrastructure, and this has pushed up the cost of its goods. Industry analysts and third-party logistics providers said these supply chain inefficiencies, left unchecked, would undermine China’s long-term economic growth. “Compared to developed countries where logistics costs are approximately 9 per cent to 10 per cent of GDP, logistics costs accounted for about 21 per cent of GDP in China,” said Jerry Hsu, president, Greater China area, DHL Express Asia Pacific, citing Ren Xingzhou, director of the Market Economy Research Department at the State Council’s Development Research Centre.

Wincanton trucks into home delivery

What a difference profit makes. Warehousing and delivery company Wincanton has just bought two companies with similar sales paying GBP 2 million for one and up to GBP 27 million for the other.
Lane, which delivers white and other household goods to your doorstep, fetched just GBP 2 million for its GBP 47 million of sales. Over-expansion had left the company making losses with debts of GBP 6 million which Wincanton (WIN) takes on.
Finance director Gerard Connell, who claims Wincanton is number two in logistics in the UK to Exel, says Lane provides a good ‘beach head’ to the fast-growing home delivery market. He admits home delivery companies have historically struggled to make money.
The other acquisition, RDL, specialises in delivering bricks and other building material for the likes of Hanson and Ibstock. In its last figures it made profits before interest and amortization of GBP 3.8 million on sales of GBP 57.6 million.
Connell says a number of big construction companies are expected to outsource their trucking and warehouse operations soon so there are plenty of opportunities.

Postal Ministry to decentralize operations

Liberia’s Post Master General and Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, Jackson E. Doe, is seeking the involvement of county superintendents of the 15 sub-political divisions in a bid to stretch out postal activities throughout the country.

Speaking at the 132nd anniversary of the Universal Postal Union UPU, held at the ministry yesterday, Minister Doe appealed to superintendents to assist the Post & Telecommunication Ministry in setting up offices in the counties.

He said government was committed to improving the postal system to adequately serve the public and urged local authorities to assist in the mail delivery service.

The UPU 132nd anniversary was celebrated under the theme, “Reaching Everyone, Everywhere”.

The Post Master General said the protracted civil war, which destroyed every aspect of the society, greatly affected the postal system, saying it was the concern of government to ensure that the nation’s postal services are on par with international standard.

He said in order to make sure that services reach to the rural areas, every mechanism developed by that ministry should be supported by all, emphasizing that communication plays a vital role in national reconstruction and reconciliation.
