FedEx opens its largest operations station in China

FedEx Express has opened a new operations centre in Shanghai to cope with the growing demand and package volumes in China. The new 5,140 square metre facility in the Pudong Sanlin area is now the largest FedEx station in China.

It is handling pick-up and delivery for international express shipments from customers in the Huangpu, Jingan, Nanhui and Fengxian districts, as well as some parts of the Pudong New District.

FedEx said the new station has more than 90 employees and nearly 70 vehicles.

It is fitted out with inbound and outbound sorting systems that can process up to 3,500 items an hour.

Shanghai plays a “vital role” in the company’s strategy in China, according to FedEx China managing director of international service operations Audrey Cheong.

The city is growing rapidly as a key economic centre in China, with imports and exports growing 21% year-on-year, totaling $208bn USD in the first six months of 2011.

FedEx now has five international express operations stations in Shanghai, along with a domestic service distribution centre and two domestic service operations stations.

“We are continually expanding our operations and services to meet the increasing demand in the local market,” said Cheong. “As the largest FedEx station in China, the new facility will further strengthen our operations and give us the flexibility to support FedEx business growth in Shanghai and east China.”

The new Shanghai station connects with the FedEx Express gateway at the Shanghai Pudong International Airport.

The American company signed a strategic partnership agreement with the airport operator, Shanghai Airport Group, back in June, which focuses on expanding cargo capacity and other operational facilities at the airport.
