Wincor Nixdorf to provide 600 ATMs for Turkish post offices

Friday, January 6th, 2012

Turkish Postal Service PTT is extending its network of automated teller machines, signing up manufacturer Wincor Nixdorf to provide 600 new units.

Wincor Nixdorf said the rollout of the new systems would begin at the start of March 2012, and should be completed by August.

The German manufacturer supplied PTT with 204 of its ATMs back in 2009, and said that once the latest commission is complete, around half of the ATMs in the PTT network will be Wincor Nixdorf machines.

The new ProCash 2150 machines will be part of the nationwide ATM network in Turkey, allowing any bank customer to access their accounts and withdraw money. PTT has opened its ATMs to third party users as of this year, to access funds via debit or credit cards.

They will also be used by PTT banking customers, who can open banking accounts in the 4,500 PTT branches, which can also be used to transfer money in a less expensive alternative to national bank services.

Wincor Nixdorf said the new units will be equipped with modules for depositing bank notes and scanning in checks as well as being able to dispense coins.

The company told Post&Parcel the new ATMs would also allow PTT customers to carry out bill payment activities for utilities, telecoms companies and banks.

Postal opportunities

Wincor Nixdorf sees much of its business supplying banks and retailers with ATM machines and software. But the firm said the liberalisation of postal markets around the world is providing good opportunities at the moment, particularly in supporting posts to modernise and standardise their IT infrastructures and processes..

Spokesman Ulrich Nolte said state-run posts were having to upgrade their entire IT networks in order to head off increased competition from the private sector over the next two or three years.

New technology like multifunctional ATMs can mean increased customer loyalty and better service within post offices, he said.

“The trend of necessary network transformation processes within postal organisations can be observed on almost every continent of the world,” he said. “All are looking for smarter business processes while still being obliged to stick to the rules of universal service obligations.”

Last year, Wincor Nixdorf secured an order for 1,100 new ATMs to help Poste Italiane modernise its network.

“We at Wincor Nixdorf see high business potential in working together with postal operators. With our solution portfolio for postal branches and the self-service channel as well as our Cash Cycle Management Solutions for optimised cash processes, we feel well positioned in the market,” said Nolte.
