Japanese Yamato Transport to Launch Small-Lot Mail Delivery Service

Japanese door-to-door parcel delivery firm Yamato Transport Co. plans to launch small-lot mail delivery services for individuals Wednesday in a bid to compete with Japan Post, Japan’s public postal corporation.

For the launch of new services, excluding the delivery of personal letters, Yamato Transport has obtained government approval to change contract terms on its existing mail services for large-lot clients, informed sources said Tuesday.

The change allows customers to make cash settlement for each delivery, instead of advance contracts required for the current services.

Applications for the new services will be accepted at some 2,600 branches nationwide.

In the new services, no stamp duties are required, with the delivery of one mail weighing up to 100 grams costing a competitive price of 110 yen.
