Posten to expand in the Nordic countries

Posten’s Nordic parcel delivery operations reporting tremendous growth
Nordic operations leverage the DPD parcel delivery network; Posten has wholly and part-owned subsidiaries in Denmark, Finland and Norway
Soaring growth in the Danish delivery market has necessitated new investment. Posten has earmarked 100 million Swedish kronor for operations in the Danish cities of Aalborg, Aarhus, Kolding and Herning
In light of solid volume growth reported by DPD Denmark, Posten must now invest 100 million Swedish kronor to achieve the requisite capacity and delivery performance as well as to create a satisfactory work environment for the entire Danish DPD network. Investments comprise construction of a new terminal in Kolding, construction of new depots in Herning and Aarhus, and leasing a new terminal in Aalborg.

The effort aims to defend and expand Posten’s market position in the Nordic countries. The new strategy approved by Posten’s board of directors in December 2003 names Sweden and the wider Nordic region as Posten’s principal markets.

“Over the past five years DPD Denmark has more than tripled its volume. Evolving the Nordic parcel delivery network enables us to continue to provide secure and reliable delivery services,” says Posten’s president and CEO Erik Olsson.

DPD Nordic
The DPD network is Europe’s second largest parcel delivery network. Through DPD Nordic AB, Posten owns the franchise rights for DPD throughout the Nordic region. Last year 60 million parcels were distributed in partnership with subsidiaries in Denmark, Finland and Norway.

DPD Denmark
DPD Denmark has successively expanded, seeing growing volumes since its inception ten years ago. Business has more than tripled over the past five years, translating to 2003 sales of 340 million Swedish kronor on a volume increase of 23 percent.

Background
Since the mid-1990s Posten’s strategy has been to expand the international parcel delivery business. As part of this strategic effort Posten Sverige acquired the Nordic franchise rights for DPD in 2001. Posten acquired 100 percent of DPD Denmark and Finland, as well as 50 percent of Tollpost in Norway in 2001.
