DHL to launch new European IT centre in Prague

Logistics firm DHL will in two weeks launch operation of a new Prague-based European computer centre, the largest IT operations centre in the company’s global network, CzechInvest agency spokeswoman Jana Viskova told CTK.

DHL’s investment of over Kc5bn in the project which will offer employment to some 1,000 people is unparallelled in the sector in the past two years, Viskova said.

DHL will gradually shift activities from data centres in Great Britain and Switzerland to the new local centre situated in the southern part of Prague, near the D1 motorway.

The centre will be part of a single infrastructure of DHL’s information system, together with similar facilities in the USA and Malaysia.

According to earlier information, DHL plans to invest EUR0.5bn (around Kc15bn) in the centre, making it the third largest investment in the Czech Republic.

It will employ about 400 staff by end-2004 and the workforce will rise to about 1,000 in two years.

DHL, owned by Deutsche Post World Net, operates in 228 countries and employs 170,000 staff. It entered the Czech market in 1986 via a local company.

It operates a branch in Prague, established in 1991, and employs more than 1,700 staff.

After a merger with two other major Deutsche Post companies Danzas and Euro Express this year, DHL became the largest logistics company in the world.
