DHL heads for a greener future and supports government`s sustainable energy initiative

DHL, the world`s leading express and logistics company, will from today take its electricity from a green energy source supplied by Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE). Instead of traditional electricity, 181 UK offices will now be drawing energy from a good quality combined heat and power source (CHP). Unlike conventional forms of power, CHP is a fuel-efficient energy that puts the heat by-product normally wasted to environmental good use.

CHP is an important element in the Government`s new energy policy setting the UK on a path to achieving a 60 per cent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by 2050 and 10,000 MWe of good quality CHP capacity in the UK by 2010.

This initiative contributes to DHL`s current goal of achieving global ISO 14001 certification, the international standard for environmental management systems and reinforces DHL`s commitment to being environmentally responsible.

“Being committed to the environment has always been at the forefront of DHL`s business,” said Nicola Philips, Environmental Manager at DHL. “Through our investment in a new fleet of 34 Boeing 757SF aircraft to cut noise at take-off by 77% and carbon dioxide emissions by 13%, to the introduction of our Global Environmental Management system, maintaining the environment has always been high on our corporate agenda. Changing our energy supplies to a green source not only supports this view, it also means we are actively contributing to the Government`s sustainable energy policy.”

SSE`s Chris Barwick said: “SSE now owns around 40% of the UK`s renewable energy capacity and we are delighted to be supplying DHL with all of its electricity needs from green sources. In fact, DHL is just one of many more environmentally conscious companies which are now switching their supply contracts to green energy sources. This bodes well for future development of good quality CHP and renewable electricity generation in the UK.”
