Asia-Pacific postal services combine to fight couriers

Australia Post is part of an alliance intended to improve competition against international air express companies. The other alliance members are China Post, Hong Kong Post, Korea Post, Japan Post and the US Postal Service. The alliance will provide a low-cost express courier service. It will target small to medium-sized businesses. The new enterprise will offer over 261 million delivery points, with 142,000 retail locations. Its rates for parcels up to 30 kilograms will be between 40 per cent and 50 per cent lower than those of competitors.

HONG KONG (AFX) – National postal services in the Pacific region have set up a coordinated express delivery system for Asia, the government said.

It said in a statement that the system involves six of the world’s leading postal administrations, namely Australia Post, China Post, Hongkong Post, Japan Post, Korea Post and the United States Postal Service.

The system will link the networks of their postal services. Customers will then have access to a database of localities and postcodes across 8 bln combinations. Customers can also track shipments online, from posting to delivery.

‘Together, we have more than 261 mln delivery points throughout the entire network, as well as some 1.6 mln employees and 142,000 retail locations,’ said Allan Chiang, postmaster general of Hongkong Post.

‘This kind of presence is unmatched by any delivery company today and gives us a unique platform for providing extensive express service coverage for our customers,’ he noted.

Delivery for express courier services range from overnight between selected localities in Asia, 2-3 days for other Asian localities and Australia, 3 days from Australia/Asia to the US and 5 days from the US to Asia/Australia.
