India Post launches logistics service

India Post has launched “Logistics Post Service” between Coimbatore and Chennai on Thursday and plans to start the service between Tirupur and Tuticorin shortly. According to the Postmaster General, western region, K. V. Sundar Rajan, the Coimbatore-Chennai-Coimbatore service will also connect Tirupur, Erode, Villupuram, Tindivanam and Chengalpattu. Salem will be covered soon.
Mr. Rajan explained that cargo could be booked in these places apart from Coimbatore.

The weight of the cargo should be minimum 50 kg. The department offered free pick-up and delivery and loading and unloading of cargo. It also offered credit facility by Book-Now-Pay-Later scheme as value-added service.

Launching the overnight cargo service, he said that Logistic Post Centres were started at Red Fields Post Office (Trichy Road, Coimbatore), Tirupur RMS (Tirupur) and Karungalpalayam Post Office (Erode district). The service was already available from Chennai to Tiruchi, Chennai to Madurai and Chennai to Pondicherry.

The service was started between Hosur and Chennai last year and then extended to Bangalore. The response was encouraging especially in Hosur and Ambur.
For the Coimbatore service, four vehicles would operate initially (each with a capacity of 5.5 tonnes). It planned to start full truckload service for the units that wanted to book a full truckload of cargo.

He urged the industries to avail of the service and give their feedback. He also inaugurated the new building of the Redfields Post Office here.
Our Staff Reporter from Tirupur adds: The Department of Posts on Thursday inaugurated the logistic service between Tirupur and Chennai.

Responding to the suggestion by the knitwear exporters and hosiery manufacturers for domestic market, Mr. Rajan said that they would shortly operate full truckload service from Tirupur to Tuticorin and Chennai. Stating that Tirupur was a potential market for cargo services, Mr. Rajan asked the postal staff to tap the market with research and dynamism.

The South India Hosiery Manufacturers’ Association president, Mohan P. Kandasamy; the Tirupur Exporters’ Association secretary, G. Karthikeyan, and the Knit Cloth Manufacturers’ Association president, Ahill S. Rathinasamy, underlined the importance of Tirupur market and complimented the department for offering a variety of products.
