Budgens counts the cost of home delivery

Budgens aborted to develop an online shopping service has cost the company £2.5 m in launch and closure costsand cut £1.2m from its profit in the 28 weeks to November 12.

A spokesman saysOur stores are situated in local communities, there is no demand for online or home shopping because they travel to us on foot. I dont think we will be trying to develop this again.

The online service was first set up in 1999 and closed in september last year. Budgens also revealed it has no plans to alter its in-house distribution operation despite plans to open five new stores by the end of the year.
