Sagawa Express to develop and introduce a package delivery service with CO2 emissions credit with cooperation from Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation

Sagawa Express to develop and introduce a package delivery service with CO2 emissions credit with cooperation from Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation to contribute to 6% GHG emissions under the Kyoto Protocol.

We at Sagawa Express Co., Ltd. will develop and introduce a new service called “Hikyaku Express with CO2 Emissions Credit” with cooperation from Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation. This is the industry’s first attempt to contribute to the target of a 6% greenhouse gas emissions reduction that the Japanese government is required to achieve under the Kyoto Protocol, by taking advantage of door-to-door delivery services that have increasingly penetrated into the everyday life of the general public.

The Hikyaku Express with CO2 Emissions Credit is a service that enables voluntary donation of a carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions credit to the Japanese government by equally sharing part of the cost for purchasing the CO2 emissions credit between Sagawa Express and consumers who use our parcel delivery services when purchasing goods from mail-order businesses with whom we are in partnership.

Furthermore, Sagawa Express will launch a campaign to help stop global warming on April 1, 2008 for our individual customers who wish to contribute to the government’s 6% greenhouse gas reduction when using our parcel delivery service, in which a credit of emissions equivalent to that necessary for transporting each package will be donated automatically by ordering the collection and delivery of a package through our website.

Sagawa Express will offer the Hikyaku Express with CO2 Emissions Credit service by purchasing a CO2 emissions credit (10,000 tons from a wind power project in India) through Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation under a greenhouse gas reduction project approved by the UN. Outline of the Hikyaku Express with CO2 Emissions Credit service

Sagawa Express will work with the mail-order businesses that use our delivery services to establish a network system for the Hikyaku Express with CO2 Emissions Credit.
When a mail-order shopper (purchaser of goods) selects the Hikyaku Express with CO2 Emissions Credit service, she/he shall bear part of the cost for buying CO2 emissions credit, in addition to the charge for delivery. Detailed information on this service will be provided on our website at a future date.

Sagawa Express also bears the same amount of the cost as the mail-order user (purchaser of goods). A CO2 emissions credit equivalent to the combined amount is voluntarily donated to the Japanese government; the donated CO2 emissions credit will be included in the count of the 6% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions stipulated for Japan in the Kyoto Protocol.

With today's news release as a cue, we will begin announcing our new service to mail-order businesses that use our delivery services. Upon completing necessary arrangements for the new service with these mail-order businesses, we will introduce the service to the market.

Outline of the Campaign to Help Prevent Global Warming

When ordering collection or delivery of goods on the Sagawa Express website (http://www.sagawa-exp.co.jp)(in Japanese), our customers can select the Hikyaku Express with CO2 Emissions Credit. For those preferring this service, we will issue a
"Green Card Contributing to 6% Emissions Reduction (provisional name)," on which are printed the CO2 emissions of 346 grams(*) necessary for delivery of one package. Through this service, we will enhance our customers' awareness of the amount of emissions required for package delivery, promoting the implementation of visual control of CO2 emissions. However, there is no need for our customers to bear any costs other than the charge for delivery.

* This service does not offer CO2 emissions credits themselves to our customers.
A stamp will be affixed on the "Green Card Contributing to 6% Emissions Reduction (provisional name)" each time a customer orders collection of a package. The amount of CO2 emissions contributing to reduction of GHG emissions per stamp is shown on the card.

Sagawa Express will voluntarily donate the amount of CO2 emissions equivalent to the number of stamps for contributing to reducing CO2 emissions. This CO2 emissions credit will be included in the 6% GHG emissions reduction figure, the Japanese government's target stipulated in the Kyoto Protocol.

This service aims to further enhance our customers' awareness of the issue of global warming by providing an opportunity to realize the amount of CO2 emitted by using package delivery services.

This campaign will be held from April 1 through September 30, 2008. However, it will end sooner if all the CO2 emissions credits purchased by Sagawa Express for this service are bought through the two services to be launched. In this case, we will notify our customers via our website.

(*) The figure derived from dividing the total CO2 emissions credits by Sagawa Express by the total number of packages handled in FY2006.

[Background]
This is the inaugural year of the first commitment period (2008 to 2012) of the Kyoto Protocol to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as part of efforts to tackle global warming. The global environment is also a priority issue on the agenda of the G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit to be held in July 2008.

Sagawa Express, founded in Kyoto, where the Kyoto Protocol was created, has been making active efforts to reduce CO2 emissions by introducing a fleet of compressed natural gas (CNG)-fueled trucks that generate less CO2 emissions than conventional vehicles, and by facilitating a modal shift from trucks to railway and marine transportation. In addition, we have promoted studies on services that contribute to safeguarding the environment, using package delivery services– a physical distribution most familiar to general consumers– as a model case. An example is our cooperation in a demonstration experiment on an eco-point system for package delivery services (a software support project by Green Partnership). Studies have found that many people have a desire to contribute, in a consumer capacity, to the 6% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, a target that the Japanese government has promised to achieve under the Kyoto Protocol, yet people have no idea how to do so. To meet such consumer needs, we have decided to develop the Hikyaku Express with CO2 Emissions Credit, with cooperation from Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation.

Sagawa Express will continue to make company-wide efforts toward the reduction of CO2 emissions and the development of CO2 emissions credit-related and other environmentally friendly products and services by further promoting cooperation among our individual customers (general consumers), business customers (mail-order businesses, etc.) and us (Sagawa Express).

* In this service, the term "CO2" is used instead of "greenhouse gas" because carbon dioxide (CO2) comprises the majority of the six types of greenhouse gases defined in the Kyoto Protocol. This explanatory note will also be posted on the website of Sagawa Express.
