DHL Global Mail has invested over USD 1.5m in state-of-the-art sorting equipment and implemented new Transportation Management System (TMS) technology to cut mail handling costs and enhance tracking visibility for customers.
Purchased as part of the company’s ongoing infrastructure investment programme, the two advanced sorting machines are expected to further eliminate manual processes. They will be installed at the company’s two largest mail terminals in Chicago and New York City.
Customised for DHL Global Mail with high-speed feeders for flat-size mail, the IntelliStar MC models manufactured by BÖWE BELL + HOWELL, a global IT solutions provider, have the capacity to process materials at a high-speed rate of 8,000 pieces per hour.
In addition, DHL Global Mail was the first mail operator to launch TMS, an unmatched solution for high-volume mailers and parcel shippers to make mailing more efficient and keep customer costs down.
TMS is an advanced software system for managing shipments between pickup and delivery, as well as the company’s relationships with transportation partners in delivery network reaching more than 220 countries and territories worldwide.
The new tool will provide DHL Global Mail with unprecedented shipment visibility within its network expected to benefit customers through improved tracking capabilities, DHL Global Mail said in a statement.
The first phase of the TMS project, implemented late last year, covers transportation between DHL Global Mail’s 17 strategically located mail terminals throughout North America. Under the second phase, the functionality of the new TMS will encompass customer pickups and USPS deliveries. The third and final phase will extend the functionality of this powerful software to mail and parcels sent by DHL Global Mail customers in the USA to international destinations.
