China to open up postal service

China to open up postal service
From ALESTRON DAILY NEWS, April 9th, 2001

CHINA, Apr 09, 2001 (AsiaPort via COMTEX) — hina is moving to open up its
postal sector, said Liu Liqing, the minister of the State Post Bureau. But the letter delivery services are currently excluded from the reform
program, Liu added. The minister made these remarks in an interview with the Laodong Daily in
Shanghai, during which he also pointed out the open-up move indicates China
begins diverting the mailing sector into a market-oriented economy from
decades of monopoly. Having long been labor-intensive and the prices severed from the true value of
the services, China’s postal sector is encountering great difficulty to
achieve further development, said Liu. And the situatin could be even worse with the inflow of the overseas rivals
after the country’s entry into the World Trade Organization, some insiders
said. To sharpen its competitive edge, the State Post Bureau has sped up the EMS
service around the nation not long ago, aiming at an efficient posting net
combined by the air transport net and the road mail system. Facing the high pressures, domestic players shall foster the integration of
the logistic flows and the information flows, and modernize their services by
advanced technology so as to survive the cut-throat competition, said Liu.
