‘6000 surplus postal workers to be absorbed as computer operators’
From BUSINESS RECORDER, April 11th, 2001

By RECORDER REPORT KARACHI : Federal Minister for Communications and Works Jawed Ashraf
Qazi on Tuesday said more than 6000 surplus staff of the postal
services would be imparted computer training and absorbed as
computer operators in the post office department. He was talking to
newsmen after a briefing on the Karachi-Hyderabad Expressway E-9 at
the Super Highway toll plaza at Gadap, Karachi. The minister said that a wrong impression had been created that
surplus staff from the Pakistan Post Offices would be laid off.
“Instead, more than 6000 surplus staff will be given training in
computer operation and would be absorbed in the department as
computer operators. The remaining surplus would also be
accommodated.” He said the village post offices, one-man post office, were being
improved as three-man post offices. “As such, the vacancies so
created would be met through the surplus staff.” He said the remuneration of village-based post office staff was
being raised from Rs 300 to Rs 1000. “This increase in the part-time
salary would be met from the revenue earned from the increase in
postal charges.” Qazi said about 200 to 300 employees of the post offices were under
suspension/enquiry/removal for corruption charges. Their cases would
be decided on merit. He said shortage of postal papers/stamps of different denominations
was due to the load of work on government printing press. “We have
obtained a no-objection certificate from the government printing
press permitting us printing of post office papers/stamps from the
local market. There would be no shortage after this procedure is
adopted.” He said in the railways 160 employees were under disciplinary action
for charges of corruption.
