UPS have begun operating the first phase of the $1.1bn Worldport expansion at Louisville International Airport, USA.
Business First reports that: The first phase will allow UPS to expand its package-sorting capacity at the hub by 15%, to 350,000 packages per hour, from 304,000 packages per hour.
The company said it exceeded its minority-hiring goal of awarding 20% of its $240m general construction budget to minority- and women-owned businesses.
When the project was announced, three phases were planned. To date, only two of the phases have been approved by company officials, said Jackie Blair, public relations manager for UPS Airlines.
The second phase is scheduled to open in May 2010. A third phase will be initiated when the economy turns around and air freight shipping rebounds, Blair said.
When the total project is complete, Worldport will be expanded to 5.2m square feet from 4m square feet. The number of aircraft docks will be expanded to 70 from 26. The number of conveyors will be expanded to 31,578 from 12,874.
