UPU urges postal leaders to help “Seal the Deal”

Postal leaders from across the world have put their names to a Universal Postal Union (UPU) banner that will be presented to world leaders before December’s United Nations (UN) climate change conference in Copenhagen. Top executives from France, Germany, Greece, Italy, India and the restricted union PostEurop joined UPU director general Edouard Dayan to sign their names on an eight-metre long “Seal the Deal” banner.

The banner will be sent to the conference with a message to world leaders to conclude a fair and effective deal. The “Seal the Deal” campaign is an UN-led initiative to mobilise support for an agreement in Copenhagen.

The UPU has created two banners and is inviting postal-sector representatives to sign their names to it to show their commitment to climate-change issues and Copenhagen, as well as to work together to find solutions to reduce carbon emissions.

The UPU has collected data from some 100 Posts to produce the first global inventory of carbon emissions produced by Posts. Results will be presented around the Copenhagen conference, which the UN specialised agency for international postal services will attend as an official observer.

A UPU statement reads: “The global postal sector, with a network of some 600,000 postal establishments and as many vehicles used to move the mail daily, is an important producer of greenhouse gas emissions. That’s why the UPU is working with its member countries and regional postal organisations to better assess the sector’s impact on the environment and find solutions for postal operators to reduce their carbon footprint. Through its Sustainable Development Project Group, the UPU is committed to addressing one of the most important issues of our times. As the United Nations specialised agency for postal services, the UPU proudly supports the UN-led “Seal the Deal” campaign, developed to galvanise political will and public support for reaching a comprehensive global climate agreement in Copenhagen in December.”
