Kenya to Introduce New Postal Coding System

The Postal Corporation of Kenya is set to spend over 102 million shillings (about 1.3 million U.S. dollars) to introduce a new coding system for all post office boxes across the country, local newspapers reported on Tuesday.

All post offices will have their own codes to help sorting mails, said Post Master-General Bishar Hussein, after signing a contract with the Kenya Postal Directories Limited for publishing, printing and production of the post office directories here on Monday.

The 1,200-page directories will be ready in three months and be sold to the public at 300 shillings (about 3.8 dollars) per copy.

The code, to have five digits, will eliminate duplication of numbers and improve mail sorting. Each of the five digits will identify the region, head office and specific post office.
