Austrian Post Office may cut 300 jobs

Austria’s postal workers’ union is demanding that Osterreichische Post AG, the Austrian post office, refrain from redundancies, amid fears that 300 redundancies could result from the planned closure of around 700 post offices. Regional post office directors have this week sent news of the planned closures to those who will be affected. However, it is said that concrete measures can be taken only in agreement with representatives of municipalities.

Helmut Modlhammer, president of the municipalities’ association, has said that he expects problems for delivery staff and customers from planned reforms to delivery services, under which the number of delivery offices would be reduced. He is calling for the concept for delivery reforms to be abandoned or pursued only on a small scale. Abstracted from Der Standard in German FT McCarthy – Copyright 2001 Financial Times Information.
