Totalpost brings US x-ray screening technology to UK mailrooms

Mailroom equipment supplier Totalpost Services has linked up with x-ray screening machine manufacturer Astrophysics Inc. to bring a new range of screening machines to the UK. US firm Astrophysics has been supplying air cargo screening systems to the US Department of Homeland Security this year, and is now teaming up with UK firm Totalpost to introduce its XIS series of machines into Britain.

Cumbria-based Totalpost said mailroom security was becoming increasingly important, and suggested that one of the “most common” types of criminal attack on organisations and individuals was as postal threats.

The XIS machines feature “cutting-edge” x-ray systems and real-time diagnostics to detect a range of potential threats in cargo and in parcels, the company said, adding that the systems’ have a greater steel penetration and high sensitivity to detect wires.

The range being made available includes mobile scanning units that are suitable for screening at events or in temporary locations, as well as systems designed for mailrooms to screen letters and parcels.

Totalpost managing director David Hymers said: “Security is now one of the biggest priorities for UK firms. By offering this market-leading technology we can help deliver a new level of service for a variety of organisations, small and large, across the UK – and help them minimise any threat to their organisation.”

Astrophysics was founded nine years ago, in the same year as Totalpost, designing and assembling its XIS systems at its headquarters in the City of Industry, California.

The company provides x-ray inspection systems for baggage and cargo screening in applications ranging from airports and customs facilities to banks, prisons and hospitals, with three of its systems qualified in the US Transportation Security Administration screening programme.

Hymers said: “We are very excited to bring such exciting new technology into our sector. Here at Totalpost we strive to bring only most advanced and high quality products to our customers, and these systems are the future of mailroom security.”
