Heavy strike action in southern Belgium as La Poste holds tense board meeting

Belgian postal services operator La Poste, which has been heavily criticised for its performance by the government in recent weeks, held a meeting of its administrative board on Friday. Following the meeting, the group issued a communique relating to its plan of action for resolving its problems. The board also confirmed its wish to guarantee La Poste’s quality of service and to pursue its modernisation.

Meanwhile, the group was affected by the first of three days of strike action in the Walloon region. According to figures provided by La Poste’s management, two out of three post offices in the region remained closed on Friday, with deliveries to only 20 per cent of homes. Unions claim that the strike was a great success, with close to 90 per cent of workers taking part in the industrial action. The Brussels region is set to be affected on Monday, followed by Flanders next Friday.
