United Parcel Service Creates Atlanta-Based Sales, Marketing Unit

United Parcel Service has formed a new Atlanta-based unit to sell corporate clients on the Sandy Springs company’s expanding array of transportation, finance and logistics services.

UPS Supply Chain Solutions will handle sales and marketing for UPS and more than 20 companies it has acquired since 1999, when UPS went public with a $5.5 billion stock offering.

“We’re taking the talent from all the people and organizations we’ve acquired and bringing them together to provide our customers with a single point of contact,” said Joe Pyne, UPS senior vice president in charge of the new group. “We want to sit down with our customers and bring them much broader solutions.”

UPS Supply Chain Solutions will market its service to the 100 largest UPS customers first, Pyne said, as well as key companies in the health care, technology, telecommunications, automotive, consumer goods and retail industries. The new organization will have about 100 employees at first.

UPS is seeking to take over broad transportation, planning and customer service functions for customers. “Non-package” revenue grew 42 percent last year compared with 2000 and accounted for $2.4 billion of UPS’ $30.6 billion in sales.

Separately, UPS said it won the NAACP’s top corporate award for its charitable giving and management training programs. UPS also was named Fortune magazine’s most admired transportation company for the 19th consecutive year.

UPS shares closed at $56.84, up 12 cents.
