Post boss calls for pay freeze
CONSIGNIA chairman Allan Leighton resumed his attack on Post Office workers this weekend, insisting that they were not entitled to more pay.
‘The truth is that no one should have a penny pay rise,’ he said. ‘I am not afraid to say it. There should be a pay freeze.
‘We are losing more than £1 million a day and people are asking for a five per cent pay rise. It is my job to be honest and talk straight. I have told staff to forget about a five per cent increase.
We should have a freeze. If I had been chairman more than three months ago we would not have even made a pay offer.
‘A five per cent pay increase would cost us £200 million.’ His controversial remarks came as unions and Consignia, the new name for the Post Office, began talks to avert a strike over pay.
A spokesman for the Communication Workers Union said: ‘Obviously these remarks are provocative. He has a lot to learn about this public service.’
