Head of PO Banking quits

Plans to create universal banking services for social security claimants in post offices have suffered a set-back after the resignation of the executive in charge of the operation. Basil Larkins, executive director at Consignia, the renamed Post Office, resigned for personal reasons.

His departure comes at a difficult period in the construction of the banking arm which is regarded as crucial for the survival of the ailing post office network. It is also seen to be vital if the government is to press ahead with its plans to pay benefits directly into bank accounts by April 2003.
