Tibbett starts £60m Tesco contract

Tibbett & Britten will run Tescos 46,000 sq m (500,000 sq ft) ambient food distribution site on a £60m three year contract. Secondary distribution is included in the contract to 100 Tesco stores in the south east, from Brighton to Covent Garden to East Anglia.
The new £45m distribution centre in Thurrock was officially opened in October by Tesco IT and logistics director Philip Clarke, Chairman John Harvey and the Niavor of Thurrock, Councillor Barrie Lawrence.
Mr Clarke said: “Less than 18 months ago this area was 37 acres (15ha) of wasteland, mud and lake, and we have watched it grow into this facility.
The distribution centre was built in 18 months. When fully operational from June 2002, it will employ 1,100 staff and operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The site has a vehicle maintenance unit with MOT test facility run by Tibbett.
Also present at the opening were representatives from construction company Taylor Woodrow, architects Smith Smalley, members of Thurrock Council and the Amalgamated Engineering and Electrical Union.
