Swiss Post to upgrade sort capacity at three parcel centres

Swiss Post has announced plans to upgrade three of its parcel centres as part of continuing efforts to boost its e-commerce shipping capabilities.
The state-owned national postal operator in Switzerland said that in order to continue to handle parcels to its “usual high standard” even at peak times, it needs to expand sorting capacity at the Härkingen, Frauenfeld and Daillens centres.

Swiss Post said 46% of its customers want parcels to be delivered next day at the moment, while returned parcel volumes are steadily increasing.

The company processes more than 1m parcels a day during peak season in the run-up to Christmas.

The first phase of expansion will see an additional, more powerful sorting system installed at the Härkingen parcel centre, Swiss Post said. Under a CHF 20m investment, the centre’s 20,000 parcels an hour capacity will be taken up to more than 25,000 an hour with a more efficiency system.

New sorting systems for the Frauenfeld centre are currently being installed, while upgrades for the Daillens centre are scheduled to start next year.

Upgrades to the Härkingen parcel centre will give it a 25,000 parcel per hour sorting capacity in peak season

Swiss Post said the new systems will be designed so that when volumes are low, parts of the system can be shut down, potentially reducing energy consumption by up to 80%.

Strategy

“Extending the sorting capacity of its parcel centres is part of a strategy Swiss Post is using to
further expand its online retail services and accommodate customers’ needs for more flexibility
when receiving parcels,” the company explained.

The company said the demand for more flexibility in receiving and returning items is also being addressed by new service innovations.

These include new parcel locker terminals, evening and Saturday deliveries, and delivery notifications. New logistics solutions for e-commerce merchants have been available since May 2014 through the YellowCube service, which provides e-retailers with all the operations needed to fulfill sales online, from order processing, marketing and packaging to returns management and payments.
