UPS intra-Asia volume up 19%

United Parcel Service said it has seen its intra-Asia volume rise almost 19% since it opened a regional hub in the Philippines in April.

The new network, based at the former Clark Air Force Base, connects nine major Asian markets with overnight delivery service.

Responding to strong demand for shipments from Asia, UPS added two extra weekend flights from Hong Kong to the U.S. at the end of May using Boeing 747 freighters. Spokesman John Flick said it was unusually early for the carrier to be adding extra flights. The move could, however, refIect demand from shippers worried about the possibility of a strike by West Coast dockworkers when their contract expires June 30.
