DPD Germany investing €50m in major parcel centre near Dortmund

Parcel carrier DPD Germany is investing EUR 50m in a new hub near Dortmund that is set to become one of Germany’s largest parcel sorting centres. The company majority-owned by La Poste’s GeoPost Group has acquired a 95,000 square metre site (1m square feet) at the InlogParc business park in Hamm, near the A2 motorway, to develop the new facility.

Construction is expected to start mid-2015 on a 17,000 square metre sorting hall and 2,500 square metre office building.

The sorting centre will have trans-regional coverage, and replace two existing DPD facilities in nearby Unna.

DPD has acquired a 1m sq ft site it says could eventually house one of Germany’s largest parcel sorting operations

The new facility will provide extra capacity to handle strong growth in e-commerce parcel volumes.

DPD said the new centre will employ a workforce of 600, including 250 delivery drivers, and after several development stages will handle more than 200,000 parcels a day.

The first parcels are expected to be delivered from the new facility by the end of 2016.

Peter Störring, director of operations at DPD GeoPost Germany, said: “In the medium term the available capacities at the present locations will not be sufficient to deal with our rising parcel volumes. At the same time we wish to remain true to the region and are therefore delighted that Hamm has been able to offer us the perfect location for what will become one of Germany’s largest parcel sorting centres.”
