SingPost partners mobile phone retailer to tap Indonesian e-commerce

SingPost has formed a joint venture with an Indonesian mobile phone retailer to tap the fast-growing e-commerce opportunities in the world’s fourth most populous country. The national postal operator in Singapore said the alliance with PT Trikomsel Oke Tbk aims to become the preferred partner for Indonesian firms launching e-commerce operations.

The pairing will combine the distribution network Trikomsel operates in Indonesia with the regional e-commerce and logistics expertise and operations provided by SingPost.

SingPost provides solutions including e-commerce technology deployment, operations management, warehousing, delivery, payment and parcel collection, as well as marketing and after-sales support. Trikomsel will be providing local experience to help optimize online stores for the local market in Indonesia.

The joint venture will offer end-to-end business-to-consumer e-commerce solutions, promising a “seamless” shopping experience for online consumers.

Under the agreement, Trikomsel takes a 67% share in the venture, with SingPost’s SP eCommerce subsidiary taking the remaining 33% share.

“Crucial”

Wolfgang Baier, the group chief executive at SingPost, said the partnership came with Indonesia expected to become the third largest consumer base in the world after China and India, with the seventh largest economy worldwide.

“As the regional enabler of ecommerce, it is crucial for us to find the right partners in emerging markets,” Dr Baier said.

“Trikomsel has a broad retail distribution reach and will provide access to convenient pick-up locations across the country. Trikomsel in return can leverage our expertise in e-commerce logistics as well as our existing business platforms and initiatives to grow their business.”

Jakarta-based Trikomsel was founded in 1996, as a retailer and distributor of mobile communication products. It now has almost 900 retail stores across Indonesia.
