Kenyan Postal charges set to increase

The Postal Corporation of Kenya ( PCK) plans to increase service charges by over 30 per cent.

The corporation has applied for the Communication Commission of Kenya’s (CCK) approval to revise tariffs on postage of letters, aerogrammes and postcards.

According to the latest edition of the Kenya Gazette, if approved, the the cost of posting letters will go up from Sh 19 to Sh 25, a 31.5 per cent.

Aerogrammes postage charges will shoot from Sh 17 to Sh 23, an increase of 35 per cent while posting postcards will go up by a similar margin, from Sh17 to Sh 23. The corporation says the proposed tariff structure is reflective of the cost of providing postal services and is necessary to enable it meet its universal service obligations.

PCK is required by law to provide certain basic postal services to all customers within the country.

The notice signed by the CCK director-general also acknowledges that the proposed tariffs are likely to affect the public, local authorities, companies and individuals.

In the same Gazette notice, CCK disclosed that seven companies had applied to operate different services in the telecommunications sector.

The Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) is seeking to operate VSAT, while Asset Procurement and Development Company Limited, Mount Kenya On-line Limited, SimbaNet.Com Limited and Satellite Tracking (Kenya) Limited, want to operate internet services.

Indigo IT Solutions and Dial Africa Limited both want to operate national payphone services. Express Package Services Limited, Nilean Enterprises Limited, NK Savings and Credit Co-operative and Crescent Courier Express Limited are seeking to operate intra-country courier services.
