India deals for FedEx

FedEx Corp. said Wednesday that it had signed operational agreements with two Indian companies as part of new major service initiatives in the sub-continent.

FedEx signed an operations agreement with Prakash Airfreight Pvt. Ltd. which will provide pick-up and delivery services. An agreement with Jeena & Co. will provide nationwide customs brokerage.

FedEx previously had an operational agreement with Blue Dart Express Ltd., which opted out for a new deal with DHL Worldwide Express beginning Oct. 1.

Also on Oct. 1, FedEx will expand its own operational presence to most key commercial centers in India that represent over 85 percent of the express market. In addition, access to FedEx’s range of services will now be made easier through the addition of 100 retail locations across the country and an additional 36 branded locations.

FedEx has timed these changes to support a new wide-body outbound flight from India to the Mid-East and Europe, which started Sept. 1.

“The new business model we have announced today is one which we have successfully introduced to a number of key markets throughout the region,” said Robert W. Elliott, FedEx president for Europe, Middle East and the Indian sub-continent. “Our aim is to get close to all users of high quality international express services.”

Jacques Creeten, Managing Director of FedEx operations in India, said over the coming weeks, FedEx planned to announce further initiatives aimed at sustaining its position as the leading global express company in India.
