Zomato closes operations in four Indian cities

Zomato has announced that it will be shutting down its online food ordering business in four Indian cities: Lucknow, Kochi, Indore and Coimbatore. Commenting on the move, Pankaj Chaddah, cofounder of Zomato, said: “The size of the market is in these cities is small right now and is growing with time. We will re-launch when the time is right.”

As previously reported, one of Zomatos’ competitors, Grofers, announced last week that it was closed down its online food ordering and delivery business in nine Indian cities.

Both companies have said that they have rationalised their coverage so they can focus on the cities where they are seeing a greater volume of demand.
