UPS opposes Canadian Pacific and Norfolk Southern rail merger

UPS has joined the companies which have signalled their opposition to the possible merger between Canadian Pacific Railway and Norfolk Southern. The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday (11 February) that it had seen a copy of a letter that UPS had seen to the US Surface Transportation Board, in which the carrier stated that a merger between the two companies would not be in the best interests of the intermodal shipping community because it would lead to a reduced level of service and increased costs.

According to the WSJ, UPS also said it was concerned that the possible merger could trigger further consolidation in the region’s rail industry.
