MapmyIndia launches eLoc addressing system

MapmyIndia has formally launched eLoc – which it says will be “India’s first nation-wide digital address system”. According to MapmyIndia, the eLoc system converts addresses into six characters (which can be a combination of letters and numerals) . The company says this will offer “the freedom from having to remember, type, tell or search for long, complex Indian addresses and confusing naming systems”.

Users tap the eLoc address into the MapmyIndia app and it will “instantly offer turn-by-turn directions right up to the address”.

MapmyIndia claims the eLoc system can be used for taxi pick-up and drop-offs, emergency response calls, property administration services and – of course – postal and courier doorstep deliveries.

On its website, the company said that it is currently “making available for free over 2 crore (20 million) and counting eLocs”.

MapmyIndia added: “These eLocs cover more places (properties, flats, buildings, residences, houses, offices, businesses, tourist points of interest, villages, localities, cities, roads etc) across urban and rural India than any other public or private provider.”

In an interview piece with Economic Times, which MapmyIndia has posted on its own website too, Rakesh Verma, managing director of MapmyIndia, said: “Initially, we want to do whatever it takes to get the maximum number of people to start using it. At some point, business will start benefiting from eLocs and that’s when we will look at monetising. We want to take the total 20 million eLocs to about 100 million – as we keep building house addresses, the eLoc database will be built alongside”.
