Green light for Swiss Post and SBB joint venture
The Competition Commission (COMCO) and the European Union (EU) Commission have given the green light to SBB’s investment in Swiss Post’s subsidiary SwissSign. As previously reported, Swiss Post and SBB plan to provide a uniform digital identity for private individuals, companies and authorities in Switzerland by autumn 2017 through their joint venture.
In a statement issued today (24 March), Swiss Post explained the rationale behind the venture: “Customers wishing to purchase products and services online currently have to register on a provider’s website, enter their details and choose a username and password. Many users have to repeat this procedure for a number of online services. This means they increasingly lose track of their data and are sometimes exposed to unnecessary security risks.”
With the new Swiss e-ID solution, users will be able to access various online services using a single secure login in future.
The uniform digital identity will be developed and marketed by SwissSign, in which Swiss Post and SBB will each hold 50% of the share capital.
