Amazon reportedly in talks to buy India’s BigBasket

Amazon has reportedly begun preliminary talks about the possibility of buying the India-based online grocery operator BigBasket, according to media sources. However, an article published by Bloomberg yesterday (13 June) quoted “people familiar with the matter” as saying that the discussions are only at an early stage – and the article also noted that a BigBasket spokesperson said no talks are taking place, and Amazon declined to comment.

As previously reported, Amazon has made a major push on the Indian e-commerce market – and the pressure is now on as the two largest domestic players, Flipkart and Snapdeal, appear close to a merger agreement.
