Netherlands Economic Ministry issues postal market report

The Netherlands Ministry of Economic Affairs has today (10 July) issued a new report which looks at possible ways forward for the postal industry in a digital world. According to the Ministry, digitalisation offers significant opportunities for economic growth, but it also has implications for the universal service obligation as the volume of traditional mail is decreasing. In order to meet these challenges, the report says, basic choices have to be made over the number of delivery days per week and the potential for more collaborative deliveries.

In a statement issued today regarding the report, the Ministry of Economic Affairs said it wants to encourage more discussion between the industry stakeholders about the way forward for the postal industry – and it wants the process to start now, as the traditional postal market is shrinking rapidly.
