Swiss Post transfers mail handling at Zurich Airport to Swissport

Swiss Post transfers mail handling at Zurich Airport to Swissport

Swiss Post is withdrawing from its mail handling business at Zurich Airport and will hand over operations to Swissport on 1 September. In a statement issued today (6 July), Swiss Port said that all the employees affected by the change will be taken on by Swissport with equivalent employment conditions.

Explaining its reason for the move, Swiss Post said: “Due to the high transit share, the mail handling business at Zurich Airport is not part of Swiss Post’s core business. The decline in letter volumes and lack of synergies pose additional challenges for Swiss Post at Zurich Airport. Swiss Post has therefore decided to transfer its operations to a local service provider.”

Swiss Post said that a key concern had been to find a good solution for both employees and local partners – and it believed that Swissport – the world’s largest provider of ground transportation services which already provides the mail transport service at the Zurich location – fitted the bill. Indeed, Swiss Post already works closely with Swissport: for export, import and transit traffic, the consignments are brought to and collected from the aircraft by Swissport.

In order to make a smooth transition, work on the transfer will start this month (July).

Mail handling at Geneva Airport will continue to be operated by Swiss Post.
