Check out the one-click checkout

MetaPack has urged e-commerce retailers to “act quickly” to implement a single click checkout facility for their customers, as the patent on Amazon 1-Click expires on 12 September. In a statement sent to Post&Parcel today (6 September), MetaPack said that the one-click process uses stored customer payment and delivery information to offer “virtually frictionless checkout processes”.

Amazon took out the patent twenty years ago, added MetaPack, but when it expires retailers and brands will be at liberty to use this process.

“Amazon has protected the patent, which has been worth billions, and has granted a licence to just one company, Apple, during that period. Even though it was a US patent, it effectively had worldwide influence,” said Duncan Licence, VP for Global Solutions at MetaPack. “Now it is available for retailers and brands to implement on their own eCommerce sites, and will help reduce basket abandonment.”

But MetaPack does have an interest in promoting the one-click take-up. “In order to ensure that the one-click process works smoothly,” said MetaPack, “retailers will need to understand the best delivery option for each customer who signs-up.  MetaPack’s Delivery Options solution can help in this process, identifying customer habits so that the right option is offered to them.”

Licence added: “It is important to remember that one-click works on the basis that payment and delivery information have been previously provided by the customer. Delivery Options allows retailers to give accurate delivery choice from the point of order.”
