If the face fits…
Alibaba’s Cainiao and Ant Financial are reportedly working together on facial recognition technology that enables users to access parcel lockers. According to a report published by ChinaDaily.com, Cainiao has been testing out the technology in Shanghai.
Kiosks equipped with the facial recognition system have been installed across five locations at Shanghai’s financial district of Lujiazui, ChinaDaily said, and a “nationwide rollout” is on the cards.
Chen Jidong, director of biometric identification technology at Ant Financial, was quoted as saying: “The scanning system focuses on your face, so it doesn’t matter if you change your makeup or wear a wig.”
The facial recognition and verification process takes roughly five seconds, which is less than the time it usually takes to type in text codes.
Zou Jianhua, CEO of Diyi Box, a parcel pickup facility provider, was quoted as saying: “I would expect this investment and new process to save a substantial amount of time and ensure security. Just in Shanghai, at least 10,000 parcel pickup locations will be equipped with such functionality in three years.”
Alibaba Chairman Jack Ma demonstrated the company’s “Smile to Pay” facial recognition and payment system at the CeBIT show in Hanover back in 2015.
