Japan Post small-parcel delivery service to go nationwide

Japan Post has said it will begin a new small-parcel delivery service for a uniform fee of 500 yen in all parts of Japan on Oct. 14.

The new service, which is currently available on a trial basis in Tokyo and Osaka, is part of Japan Post’s strategy to reinforce its mail business.

Japan Post is a public corporation which took over the postal services of mail delivery, savings and life insurance from the government’s Postal Services Agency in April.

The new service will be available at about 100,000 places, including some 25,000 post offices as well as outlets of major convenience store chain operators such as Lawson Inc. Users

purchase a postage-paid envelope for 500 yen, slide their mail inside and place the packet directly in a mailbox.

The envelope can hold up to about 250 sheets of A4 paper.

Japan Post hopes to sell 5 million envelopes in the rest of the current fiscal year through next March.
