Nigerian Postal Service sets up debt recovery committee

In a bid to recover the huge amounts being owed it, the Nigerian Postal Service has set up a debt recovery committee to help them recover over N4.5 million owed by customers in Akwa Ibom State.

Disclosing this in Uyo recently, the Territorial Manager of NIPOST, Mr. Anthony Eromo-sele, said that the huge debt portfolio has made it difficult for NIPOST to effectively discharge its functions.

He further added that of N4.5 million owed to NIPOST, N2.5 million was owed by the state government parastatals and ministries while the balance of N2 million is owed by federal parastatals, local governments, secondary schools and members of the public.

He reiterated that secondary schools in the state were the worst culprits as they have resorted to abandon their mail bags filled with Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) results and other letters at the general post office, instead of paying their fees which is just N3,000 a year.

He added that in order to retrieve its monies, NIPOST will solicit the help of the state chapter of the All Nigeria Conference of Principals (ANCOPS) and the Parents Teachers Association (PTA) in its debt recovery drive.

Eromosele also disclosed that NIPOST’s University of Uyo office a mini-post office and post ship outlets in post secondary institutions in the state is set to be opened to enhance postal services in the state.

According to Eromosele, over 30 postal agencies, outlets, and departmental offices have been opened and commissioned for use throughout the state.

Eromosele, who appealed to NIPOST customers to settle their bills for better service, stressed that in order to flush out bad eggs and maintain discipline in NIPOST, about seven staff have either been suspended or dismissed outrightly for various offences including pilfering.
