UK’s Brexit Secretary David Davis and Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson resign

The UK government’s strategy for exiting the European Union has taken a pounding, following the resignation of both the Brexit Secretary, David Davis, and the Foreign Secretary, Boris Johnson.

The resignation of David and Johnson came just days after Prime Minister Theresa May had appeared to secure the backing of her cabinet for the government’s position.

Davis, who had been a prominent “Brexiteer” during the referendum campaign, was concerned that the “current trend of policy and tactics” could mean that it was “less and less likely” that the UK would leave the European Customs Union and Single Market.

Johnson – who had also campaigned on the Leave side – said in his resignation letter that the Brexit “dream is dying, suffocated by needless self-doubt”.

The resignations could threaten Theresa May’s authority within the Conservative party and weaken the UK’s position in its negotiations with the European Union (EU).
