UK to begin £8 million drone delivery trial for medical supplies

Britain will begin trialing drones to deliver medical supplies this week, Secretary of State for Transport Grant Shapps said at a press conference on Friday.

Shapps announced that he had given the green light to begin an £8 million testing initiative next week.

The drone testing program was initially launched as part of a £28 million future transport initiative in Southampton and Portsmouth. “Of course, now we have an urgent need, so we are making use of that testing program as part of our response to Covid-19,” Shapps said.

“I fast-tracked trials to begin next week to carry medical supplies and equipment to St Mary’s hospital near Newport on the Isle of Wight,” Shapps said.
