FedEx unveils expanded operations centre in Taiwan
U.S. express delivery company Federal Express (FedEx) unveiled an expanded operations centre near Chiang Kai-shek (CKS) international airport outside the Taiwanese capital of Taipei Monday.
The new operations centre is nearly three times larger than the previous one and can sort 4,000 packages per hour, twice as many as before, according to FedEx.
FedEx said the launch of the new centre proved the company was not withdrawing from Taiwan while moving its regional operations centre from Subic Bay in the Philippines to Guangzhou in China.
The regional hub at Guangzhou’s Baiyuan airport is scheduled to start operating at the end of 2007.
FedEx entered Taiwan in 1990 with five operations centres and 200 staff. It now has eight centres on the island.
Foreign investors, including FedEx, have been urging Taiwan to lift a five-decade ban on direct sea, air and trade links with political rival China. Because of the ban, cargo between Taiwan and China must pass through a third destination, usually Hong Kong. dpa dc wjh
